A new chapter of collaboration has begun between the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering – Carolina-South Atlantic Chapter (ISPE-CaSA) and NC State University’s Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC), highlighted by a generous $100,000 endowment. The announcement was made at the ISPE-CaSA 32nd Annual Tech Show, marking a major step toward building a stronger, more sustainable workforce for the biopharmaceutical industry.
“We’re so grateful for this incredible gift from ISPE-CaSA,” said Gary Gilleskie, Executive Director of BTEC. “It’s going to have a lasting impact, helping shape the future of biopharmaceutical manufacturing for years to come.” This endowment is particularly meaningful for BTEC, as it’s the first of its kind to support the center’s mission.
Gilleskie was at the Tech Show to accept the donation from ISPE-CaSA Chapter President Chris Smith. After taking on the role of president in August 2024, Smith was quick to recommend NC State for the available charitable funds, recognizing that BTEC’s mission aligned perfectly with ISPE-CaSA’s goals. The two organizations have partnered for more than 15 years, working together to strengthen connections between the local industry and university students through NC State’s ISPE Student Chapter.
The endowment will fund a scholarship for members of the NC State ISPE Student Chapter who have completed at least one BTEC course—whether undergraduate or graduate level—and are planning careers in the pharmaceutical industry. “The pharmaceutical industry needs talented individuals from all kinds of backgrounds, from science and engineering to business, law, and beyond,” said Smith. “We wanted to make sure our support reaches students from diverse academic fields.”
This endowed scholarship will provide ongoing support for future generations of students and highlights the power of partnerships in shaping the next generation of leaders in the biopharmaceutical sector. Gilleskie added, “Support from partners like ISPE-CaSA is a win-win. It eases the financial burden on students, allowing them to focus on their studies and career goals, while also strengthening the biomanufacturing industry by ensuring a pipeline of skilled professionals.”
